Butternut is one of three boys born on January 12, 2007, from dam Int'l Ch. Tagalongs KissMe With Cinnamon (Cindi) and sire Int'l Ch. KissMe Mellow Joy (Mel), part of the January 2007 Mel × Cindi litter. Judy called him "the beautiful Butternut" — a roly-poly, easy-going boy who was equally happy wrestling with his brothers or taking a well-earned rest.

By seven weeks, spring had finally arrived and the puppies were enjoying life both indoors and out — running, wrestling, sleeping, snuggling, and playing with the big dogs. Butternut could be found stealing a quiet rest between bouts of rough-housing with brothers Snickers and Mini Mel.
